Cooper Cole (Toronto) Awarded for Outstanding Presentation

Today, Frieze announced Cooper Cole from Toronto as the winner of the Frame Prize 2018 supported by Bulleit Frontier Whiskey. The prize acknowledges the gallery’s exceptional sculptural presentation by Tau Lewis in Frieze New York’s Frame section. Featuring ambitious solo shows by 19 emerging galleries and advised by leading curators Andrew Bonacina and Ruba Katrib – who hands over to Laura McLean-Ferris – Frame brings together solo artist presentations by some of the most exciting young galleries from across the world.

This year’s jury of emerging international art experts, included Courtenay Finn (Curator, Aspen Art Museum), Elena Filipovic (Director and Curator, Kunsthalle Basel), and Jamillah James (Curator, Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles).

The jury commented that the gallery had stayed true to the unorthodox nature of artist Tau Lewis’ work and commended the manner in which the presentation dealt with sculpture in an incredibly unique way. They felt the young self-taught artist’s work was rich and intense, and that this radiated out from the booth.

Empty Gallery (Hong Kong) and Château Shatto (Los Angeles) each received a Special Commendation from the jury, for their presentations by Jacqueline Kiyomi Gordon and Van Hanos respectively.

Frieze has always been committed to supporting galleries at all stages of their development. Frame was introduced in 2009 and Focus in 2011 with the aim of providing younger galleries the opportunity to participate at Frieze fairs at subsidized rates and, in doing so, to bring a broader and dynamic range of presentations to the fair.

In the spirit of exploring cultural boundaries, Bulleit, as an official partner of Frieze New York, is proud to honor emerging galleries and their artists via the 2018 Frieze Frame Prize.

Frieze New York 2018 is open to the public until Sunday 6 May, featuring 197 galleries from 30 countries, and offering a discerning perspective on contemporary art. Global lead partner Deutsche Bank sponsors the fair for the seventh consecutive year, celebrating a shared commitment to discovery and artistic excellence.
