With Inaugural Program Featuring Artist Joan Jonas, Marine Biologist Sylvia Earle, Architect Jorge Otero-Pailos, among others, New Center Advocates for Oceanic Change

WHAT: Ocean Space, a new cultural center that fosters transdisciplinary research and innovation, opens to the public this Sunday, March 24, in Venice’s Church of San Lorenzo. Initiated and conceived by the research foundation TBA21–Academy, Ocean Space encourages audiences to radically reimagine how we see and treat the defining feature of our planet through investigative exhibitions, symposia, talks, and lectures.

Located in the City of Canals, this new embassy for the oceans revitalizes the family church of Marco Polo, whose remains are fabled to be buried there. Ocean Space reintegrates this iconic and enigmatic building, which has been largely closed to the public for more than 100 years, into the cultural fabric of the city with a mission and program that engages the community locally, nationally, and internationally.

The inaugural program includes an immersive, multi-media installation by pioneering artist Joan Jonas, titled Moving Off the Land II; a moderated discussion between Jonas and legendary marine biologist Sylvia Earle; and a conversation between architect Jorge Otero-Pailos and Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, founder of TBA21 and TBA21–Academy.

WHERE: Chiesa di San Lorenzo, Venice, Italy

HOURS AND ADMISSIONS: Opening events and talks on March 23, 2019 at 17:00.  RSVP required.  Moving Off The Land II will be on view March 24 – September 29, 2019; Tuesday–Sunday 11:00–19:00.
